Can locksmiths open my home/apartment if I am locked out?

What does lock rekey mean and what does it include?

Lock rekey service refers to the process of replacing the internal parts of the lock to accept a new key set. It is a resetting of the lock “combination”. The old keys will no longer be able to open the lock.

Do I need to change my locks or just need my existing locks rekeyed?

It depends on your needs. Typically, you do not need to replace the whole lock, especially if it is in good shape. Rekeying the lock provides you the “peace of mind”.

Can locksmiths bill my insurance?

No. A locksmith will charge you for the service and will provide a formal invoice that can be submitted to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.

Will my lock still work after you pick it open?

There is no damage to a lock when it is picked by a professional locksmith.

How is a locksmith able to rekey my locks and what is a “cylinder”?

Once a locksmith dismounts the lock from the door, he will disassemble internal parts to replace the existing pins. New pins will be installed to match the new key to be used.

What is a “high security lock”?

High security locks are designed to be pick, drill and damage resistant.
The keys are made of stronger materials, are copy-restricted and stamped with “DO NOT COPY / DUPLICATE”.

How much does it cost to have a house key replaced?

Prices range from $25 to $40 per lock, depending on the type of lock. On top of that price, locksmith will charge a service call (travel) fee ($75-$90).

I am moving into a new residence, do I have to replace the locks or simply rekey?

If your locks are in good shape, you do not need to replace them. It is more than enough to get them rekeyed to get a new set of keys.
